David Franklin Marshall
Founding Member
(1928-2006)
David Franklin Marshall, our founding member, studied at the Ontario College of Art (1947-49); studied drawing and painting at the Vancouver School of Art (1950-51) and sculpture in England (1953-54). He studied with Archipenko at UBC (1956); studied graphic arts with Robert Steele at UBC (1964-65); became a Museum Display Technician II at City Hall (1968) and became an instructor in sculpture at Capilano College in B.C. (1973-90).
Initially, David Franklin Marshall was a member, (along with other alumni of the SSBC) of the Federation of Canadian Artists in Ontario in the 1940s. In 1956 a group of sculptors, including David, formed the Northwest Institute of Sculptors in Vancouver (NWIS). Through this period, the NWIS members joined the Sculptors' Society of Canada in Ontario. Eventually the members in British Columbia decided to form their own society and in 1974, formed the Sculptors' Society of British Columbia (SSBC). David Franklin Marshall remained a standing member of SSBC until his death in 2006. David was a master sculptor and left remarkable examples of good sculpture for peoples of the world to share, some of which appear below.
